Reiki Level 1 Treatment for Animals

For those who have completed Reiki Level 1, you now have basic knowledge for applying Reiki to self, to others or to small house pets, such as dogs, cats, gerbils, rabbits, small birds or aquarium fish.  Note: Reiki can also be applied to larger mammals, dangerous reptiles or wildlife, but this requires distance healing techniques, which are taught in Reiki Level 2.

It is natural for most new Reiki students to feel uncomfortable, or to feel a lack of self-assurance in their healing ability, mainly due to inexperience, especially when applying Reiki to animals.

Since most Reiki classes are unable to supply animals for class practice, only theory is taught.  Unfortunately, class-room theory is a poor substitute for gaining practical, hands-on experience.

However, the only way to overcome fear or resistance and develop total confidence in your Reiki skills is to simply take every opportunity available to you and practice, practice, practice.  You can apply Reiki on your own pets, friend’s pets or practice on the pets at your local pound.

Animal Instinct
Animals operate by natural instinct and therefore can sense the energy of Reiki that emanates from your hands, as well as sense your positive intention.  They can also sense whether you are nervous, fearful or calm.  If the animal is in the mood for Reiki, it will naturally gravitate toward and snuggle into your hands.

Upon first encounter, avoid being put off if the animal resists having Reiki.  It is simply not the right time, so try again later.  Just like humans, animals have their moods as well.

Energy Scanning
Whether you use hand scanning or pendulum scanning to check the animal’s energy flow, it really makes no difference to them.  However, since most animals move around, it is easier to check their energy when they are relaxed and lying down or sleeping.

Scanning a pet’s energy provides a perfect opportunity to practice your skills.  Especially for hand scanning which takes considerable time and practice to develop greater sensitivity in the hand chakras.  Therefore, the more you practice, the better you become, where you start to feel energy fluctuations and variations in depth and width, or tingling and pain sensations, or heat and cold spots.

Pendulum scanning can also be practiced on animals, but again, it’s better to do this when they are relaxed or sleeping.  Although it is far easier and quicker to get visual results using a pendulum, for beginners it still requires considerable practice to develop compatibility with your pendulum, as well as build confidence.  Therefore, allow your pets to help you hone your skills.

Starting Point
First silently set your intention for what you are trying to accomplish.  Here are some examples, but feel free to add your own:

  1. Do you want Reiki to reduce or eliminate pain or discomfort?

  2. Do you want Reiki to improve energy flow?

  3. Do you want Reiki to release, plus eradicate all cancerous cells replacing them with only 100% healthy cellular structure?

  4. Do you want Reiki to aid with a comfortable and positive transition (death) to the other side?

  5. Do you want Reiki to reduce stress?

  6. Do you want Reiki to provide better relaxation?

  7. Do you want Reiki to release toxins or impurities from their body?

  8. Do you want Reiki to provide balance on all levels – mental, emotional, physical and spiritual?

Once you have set your intention, gently place your hands anywhere at the head area.  This position will help to relax the animal where they drift into sleep.  With your hands on each side of their head, the flow of Reiki will help balance the left and right brain hemispheres, while inducing relaxation and calmness.  Don’t be surprised if they fall asleep within the first five minutes of treatment.

Hand Placement
As a guideline, you can follow the hand positions used for self-healing or for healing others.  However, it is not absolutely necessary to use the exact hand placements.  The duration for each hand placement can be anywhere from 1 to 5 minutes.  You can roughly estimate by calculating the number of hand positions used into the amount of time that you have.  Generally if you are unsure how to proceed, allow your intuition to guide you.

Once you finish with the head position and the animal is relaxed or sleeping, then you can either follow the chakras for improved balance or you may want to concentrate on one particular area that may be injured or painful.

And since focused intention always prevails, there is no right or wrong method.  Trust that the healing energy of Reiki will travel to where it is most needed.

Treatment Time
A Reiki session for animals may take up to 45 minutes, but the duration is also dependent on their size.  As a rule of thumb, the smaller the animal, the less time required.  There are no set rules; therefore, allow your intuition to guide you.

Animals also have their own unique way for indicating that they have received sufficient Reiki.  They simply get up and move away from your hands.

Once they back away, just finish the treatment as normal:

  1. Comb or smooth their energy (or aura) by slowly running your hands down their body from head to tail (or you can do this visually).

  2. Then visually place them in a protective bubble of colour using whatever colour you are naturally attracted to.

  3. Say a prayer of thanks and gratitude to your Reiki healing team for their assistance and guidance.  This will help develop humility and keep ego in its rightful place.

  4. Disconnect your energy using your favourite method (E.g. Dry brush or waterfall/shower technique, etc.).

  5. Wash your hands (for cleanliness).

  6. Ground, protect and cleanse your energy if necessary.

Precautions
There are certain times to avoid applying Reiki directly to an area.  This includes burns, broken bones or loss of limb.  In these circumstances, wait until the wound is cleaned and dressed or the bones are set or the limb is re-attached before applying Reiki directly to the area.  Instead, apply Reiki to the heart or head areas to induce relaxation or reduce pain and improve comfort.

In the case of cancer, avoid thinking that you can “cure” with Reiki.  Instead, before starting treatment, set your intention (use your imagination)…….. To reduce pain, or Improve the comfort level, or Improve energy flow.

This last intention specifically used for cancer……. Release, plus eradicate all cancerous cells replacing them with only 100% healthy cellular structure, is especially useful, because it simply eliminates worrying about hand placement, especially in cases where the cancer may have metastasized to other areas or in cases of leukemia.

Giving is Receiving
Animals, especially dogs, cats, and horses absolutely love Reiki.  And as a thank-you gesture, they may graciously lick your face.  So do your pets, and you, a favour by practicing on them as often as possible.  Because each time you give a treatment, by acting as the channel or conduit for the healing energy, you also receive Reiki as well.
