Distant Reiki Attunement (or Reiju)

Those who are familiar with the healing art of Reiki, also realize that attunements or initiations and symbols play a significant role in this particular energy-based healing modality.

Purpose of an Attunement
The main purpose for receiving an attunement to each Reiki level is to raise the student’s energy level and to open, plus strengthen their connection to universal spiritual energy.

Contrary to some beliefs, the Reiki Master Teacher does not pass any special healing power to the student, but merely acts as a channel in order to provide or create a safe atmosphere for them to draw in universal energy (Reiki).

And contrary to some teachings, it is unfounded that with more attunements received, a person becomes a more powerful healer.  The student gains, builds and strengthens their healing ability by simply practicing on self, others or animals on a continual basis.  The more practice applied, the better their connection to universal energy (Reiki), thus greater amounts of energy can be channelled through.

Teaching Format
Since Usui sensei, Reiki has evolved and branched into 100 or so variations, but this doesn’t mean that one is better or more powerful than another, although there are plenty who would argue this point.

Reiki Master Teachers use different formats and policies for teaching their students.  Some base their teaching curriculum on the original three levels, others teach four levels, while others may teach seven levels or more.

Teaching is based on a personal preference.  Each Reiki teacher teaches according to what they learned from their instructor, acquired knowledge, and their own beliefs and integrity.

Levels of Attunement (or Reiju)
Each level of Reiki incorporates a specific attunement process.  Some teachers adhere to a very ritualistic filled ceremony, while others maintain a more basic one.  But no matter which method is used, the attunement should be honoured with respect and dignity.

The process includes four attunements or initiations in some levels, while other levels only include one.  At each level, the attunement given, performs a specific function.

Reiki Level 1 consists of four attunements or initiations, which influences four prime areas.

First Attunement - At the head position, the attunement opens the crown chakra, which allows the student to channel greater amounts of universal energy (Reiki).  Energy is utilized through the physical body.

Second Attunement - At the shoulder position, energy is utilized through the etheric body. The attunement opens the throat chakra to enhance better communication, as well as open the cervical and spinal column, which improves the functioning of the entire nervous system.

Third Attunement – At the occipital ridge, energy is balanced between the right and left brain to promote clearer thinking and more positive action.

Fourth Attunement – At the forehead, energy influences the pineal (3rd Eye) and pituitary (Crown) glands, which increases intuitive ability, plus promotes higher states of consciousness.

Reiki Level 2 consists of one attunement or initiation that opens the heart chakra. Energy is utilized through the mental/emotional bodies. This allows the student to experience, plus share, un-conditional universal love and compassion.

Reiki Master Teacher Level consists of one attunement or initiation that affects the spiritual body.  This allows the student to manifest spiritual vision and compassion into present time, into physical reality or into the “Now”, thus enabling them to help or teach others to empower themselves.

Hands-on or Distant Attunement
With the aid of computer technology, some Reiki teachers now offer Reiki attunements and courses remotely.  The remote attunement is transmitted at a designated time much the same way as Reiki distant healing.

This may raise questions of, “Which method is better?” or “Is there any difference between receiving an attunement hands-on/in-person or remotely?”

Since Reiki is universal energy, it certainly is possible to attune a student via remote means.  But my personal choice is to avoid doing it this way.  It would be like giving someone the keys to a car, with permission to drive, but without giving any driving instruction.

As a practicing teacher, I feel that it borders on being irresponsible by allowing students to blindly "play" with universal energy (Reiki).  Without proper instruction, plus a basic understanding about spiritual energy or the spiritual realm, it opens the door to inviting possible trouble, which may scare or turn off the student’s initial interest.

Although an attunement can be remotely transmitted without a problem, the student still needs proper instruction for the various hand positions, as well as an in-depth understanding of how to apply Reiki on self, others or animals.  A student needs to know when to take precautions.  A student needs to learn how to correctly interpret symptoms or sensations and know the correct solution to apply.  A student needs to know when NOT to apply Reiki.  A student needs to know how to develop and increase their own energy vibration to enhance their channelling ability.  A student needs to know the difference when channelling universal energy through them or when they are mistakenly using their own physical energy.

A Matter of Choice
Knowledge and instruction can certainly be gained from reading Reiki books.  However, it is still not as helpful as learning directly from a qualified Reiki teacher.

Learning via remote means, makes it difficult to establish a proper rapport between student and teacher.  The feeling is similar to talking long distance on the phone – it’s just not the same energetic feeling as speaking directly face to face.

When personally attending a Reiki class, a student should receive in-depth instruction, demonstration and practice-time for grounding, protection and cleansing techniques, as well as learn Reiki hand positions for self and others, energy scanning and sweeping techniques, body movements around the Reiki table, 21-day cleansing exercises and deep-breathing techniques.  Class-time should also include hands-on application by practicing on self and others.

In our present fast-paced society, time is of the essence.  Unfortunately, this leads to finding quicker (but not necessarily better) methods for doing or learning things.

The choice is yours, but when learning a healing art, such as Reiki, it is far better to learn in a manner that will provide you with the greatest long-term benefit.  Resist trying to take the easiest, fastest or cheapest route, and realize that what works for one person may not work for another, or most importantly, for you.
