Choosing a Reiki
Master Teacher
Traditional or Non-traditional
Careful consideration
should be applied before choosing a Reiki Master Teacher. First, decide
whether you wish to learn traditional or non-traditional Reiki.
Traditional Reiki consists of
3-levels, whereas non-traditional Reiki can span from 4 to 7 levels.
Although a non-traditional Reiki teacher may implement a wider range of
techniques or material, such as crystal grids, colour therapy, crystals
and gemstones, aura cleansing, drumming, laser surgery or sound therapy, etc., these modalities
are not appealing to every student. Such information or too much
information can create
confusion and thus become counter-productive. Just learning the basics
of Reiki requires much focus, dedicated attention and lots of practice; therefore,
it is better to keep the learning process simple without added
complication.
Teacher's
Credentials
Be sure to ask how
long the teacher has been teaching and who they trained under or where
they trained. This information should be willingly supplied
without any hesitation.
A
Certificate Doesn't Make a Teacher
Although a student may take the Master Teacher level and receive certification, in reality it's only a piece of paper. Not everyone
is destined for teaching. While they may be knowledgeable in their
own right, they may lack patience, tolerance or simply have difficulty
demonstrating theory to others.
A qualified teacher should
have a detailed curriculum, as well as be proficient in clear verbal
instruction and hands-on demonstration.
Teacher's
Lineage
The lineage (or Reiki roots) traces the teacher's history back to Usui
Sensei. Some believe that the closer the ties, the purer and more
powerful the teacher or healer. But Reiki teachers who
received training many years ago may be unable to trace their
lineage mainly because their teacher lacked the information.
However, this does not mean they are not effective or powerful Reiki
Master Teachers or practitioners. Placing too much importance on a
teacher's lineage promotes snobbery, that encourages the establishment
of an elitist "class" system, which misrepresents what Reiki is all about......
universality.
Feeling a Rapport
It is important to
feel a comfortable bond with your teacher and it is equally important to share
similar beliefs or ideals. Keep in mind that rapport works both
ways; therefore, if a teacher isn't feeling positive vibes, they may
refuse you as a student.
You will sense camaraderie either through
direct conversation, phone conversation, e-mail communication or perhaps you
will gain a
"feeling" from information on their website. Usually, once you initiate
by mentally or verbally expressing to the universe what kind of teacher you require, the universe
will provide the right match at the appropriate time - there are no
coincidences or accidents.
Teacher's Fee
Material gain
should not be the prime motivation for any teacher; therefore service
should be provided for a realistic fee. Some teachers prefer to
charge whatever the going rate is, thinking that anything less will
undermine the holistic community or the value of Reiki. Meanwhile,
other teachers establish their fee according to their heart source;
thereby charging what they consider to be fair or affordable.
Refrain from
using the
Reiki Master Teacher's fee structure as a sole indicator for
assessing their teaching ability. A teacher establishes their fee
based on a variety of reasons - a higher fee doesn't guarantee receiving more
value and lower fee doesn't signify a reduction in value. The fee should be
your last concern unless finances place you on a tight budget.
When discussing the fee, ask what the course entails and what it
includes - a manual and a certificate are not always supplied.
Teaching
Facility
Investigate where or when classes are held. Is there flexibility
in scheduling? Are courses taught solo or in a group - is there
choice? What is taught at each level, what does it include and how
many hours or days does it take? Does the teacher provide a monthly Reiki Share that offers
additional practice? Does
the teacher provide on-going assistance - in person, e-mail or via
telephone?
CRA Membership
The Canadian Reiki
Association (CRA)
http://www.reiki.ca/ is Canada's national unified representation for Reiki.
Teachers are required to adhere to rules/regulations concerning course
hours and their teaching curriculum must be approved by the CRA. This means that the teaching
material must qualify to meet a certain standard. But since the
CRA is not an "accredited" association, the teaching
material will still vary from teacher to teacher. Most members who have
taken the initiative to join the CRA do so because they are committed to promote
and maintain high standards for Reiki and who welcome recognition across
Canada, as well as globally.
Bear in mind that Reiki
Master Teachers are not required to join the CRA in order to teach or
practice Reiki. This gives them the advantage to establish their
own course hours and curriculum. Some non-member teachers offer
4-hour courses without a manual or printed handouts. Let the buyer
beware! While you may think that a short course or a combined
course is great, less time spent on your part, in reality it is not very
beneficial trying comprehend so much knowledge at once. In this scenario the
teacher may demonstrate Reiki hand positions or teach Reiki symbols, but
relies on the student to read books or documentation on their own time.
Searching for a Reiki
Master Teacher through the CRA may offer a wide selection of qualified
professionals, but it still does not guarantee that you will
find an exceptional teacher.
Attributes of
an Exceptional Teacher
Although many have completed Reiki
Master Teacher level, not all are conditioned to teach and there is a vast
difference between being a teacher and being an exceptional teacher.

and wisdom willingly, without expecting recompense

of teaching and receives fulfillment by assisting others to
develop their own true potential
-

a high degree of personal integrity
Before Deciding
The final decision should be made regardless of the teacher's fee,
gender, age or nationality. As the saying goes, "Haste makes
waste," so to avoid disappointment, try not to make snap decisions.
Instead, take your time....... ask others for referrals or investigate
the teacher's website to gain more insight or phone and speak directly
to the teacher. And as you do this, pay special attention to your
gut response - do you get an immediate "uh-huh" (yes) or an "uh-uh"
(no) sensation? Or perhaps you feel a magnetic pull or at the
other end of the scale, feel a strong resistance toward a particular
teacher - again, pay attention and listen to your intuition.
